Route: Gonio – Makhuntseti – Queen Tamar’s Bridge – Wine Tasting
Today, we embark on a journey through the myths and legends of ancient Greece. Our first stop will be at the Gonio Fortress. Located in the village of Gonio in Adjara, just 15 km from Batumi, this is the oldest fortress in Georgia, covering 4.5 hectares. The history of Gonio (also known as the Gonio-Apsaros Fortress) dates back several millennia. The oldest archaeological layers found here are from the 15th–17th centuries BCE. According to legend, the name Apsaros is connected to the ancient Greek myth of the Argonauts—this is said to be the place where Absyrtus, the son of King Aeëtes, killed by Jason, was buried.
Next, we will enjoy a wine tasting session.
Our final stop for the day will be the Makhuntseti Waterfall and the arched bridge of Queen Tamar.
